The Tyranids, also known as The Great Devourer, are a race of insect-like creatures alien to the Milky Way galaxy. No one knows where they come from, but it is known that their sole purpose is to consume all forms of genetic and biological material in order to develop and reproduce. They are believed to have consumed a thousand galaxies and are responsible for the destruction of millions of intelligent species. The technology of the Tyranids is based entirely on biological engineering, every function, from warfare to space travel, is performed by living, specially constructed creatures. Each Tyranid creature together forms the Hive Fleet, which is controlled and directed by a single Hive Mind.

Tyranids are considered one of the worst threats to the entire galaxy. They seek only to consume all organic life, and you cannot reason with them, negotiate with them or stop them in this unique quest. Worse still for the galaxy, the Tyranid Hive Fleets encountered so far are merely the furthest reaching vine of the main invasion fleet, which is still roaming the void of space. When the main fleet emerges from the void, it is unknown if any race will be able to compete against them.
