The earnings call and my podcast kind of crossed over on Wednesday, each confirming that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 would be coming out on Wii — but honestly, neither did much more than that. Understandably, a lot of people have been asking for detail on the game, so I asked around internally and bugged the production team, and here’s what I found out:
- Treyarch is handling the Wii edition of Modern Warfare 3. They have a long history of Wii development as well as a proven Call of Duty history — to say the least! — so they’re a great fit.
- The plan is to bring MW3 out on Wii on the same day as the other versions being developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, but it’s a different platform with different capabilities, so this is not confirmed yet — there’s still work to do. I’ll update you when I know more.
- A lot of MW3 will fit into the Wii, but there may be differences. Multiplayer is confirmed for sure. When I know more about what the differences may be, I will report back.
- There’s also a Nintendo DS edition planned, which is being developed by n-Space. They’ve done the handheld editions of COD4:MW, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and World at War, among many other DS games. (You may remember my interview with n-Space’s Dan O’Leary on episode 030 of the One Of Swords Podcast, too.) So, the DS version is also in expert hands.
No soldier gets left behind, as it were. While a lot of people enjoy playing Call of Duty titles on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, there are also Wii and DS gamers who would like to play Modern Warfare 3 on their Nintendo platforms — and now they will be able to.
I’ll try to get some more info on both the Wii and DS versions as we get closer to the November 8 launch date for MW3.
