Call of Duty Elite: Developer walkthrough video

by Dan on July 15, 2011

Many gamers will be able to join the Call of Duty Elite beta and test the service out for themselves over the coming weeks, and I know a lot of people are impatiently refreshing their mailboxes right now waiting for an invite. But if you can’t wait, here’s a personal, casual walkthrough of Elite from the team leaders at Beachhead — Chacko Sonny, studio head, and Noah Heller, product director. Basically, if you could have attended E3, this is what you would have seen.

Please note that this video was shot about 10 days before the public beta was ready, so you are going to see some things that are incomplete even by beta standards. It’s a proper look behind the curtain in that respect.

You can also view it in HD on YouTube, so you can see more detail.

Like what you see? There’s still time to sign up for the Call of Duty Elite beta yourself. PC players will have to wait until Elite’s November launch to try it out, but if you’re a 360 or PS3 owner, you can still get involved this summer. Check out the official FAQ for more questions. I have some info on how the beta logistics will work, too.

UPDATE: Looks like some people took “PC players will have to wait until the fall to try it out” to mean there would be a PC beta in the fall. Uh, no — the beta is taking place this summer, and the final Elite service is launching in the fall, on November 8. Therefore…PC players will have to wait until the fall to try it out. I’ve amended the above so it’s more clear.

Will I need my Xbox Live account email and password to connect to CoD Elite? My email was hacked and I can’t use my Xbox Live account on things like xbox.com or bungie.net.

What a Major Fail not to include PC gamers….

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I am disappointed it. Clearly, it was in the plan, because they asked if you were a PC user when you signed up. But I guess they had to call an audible on it — better to do what you know you can do than to bite off more and have it not work. Baby steps, I suppose.

That said…November is a ways away, but it is coming, and you still get to use it for free. :)

You will need to link your Xbox Live or PSN account, yes.

    Okay thanks

This video really made me look forward to CoD Elite, I was pleasantly surprised with the crap-ton of things it has, but I’m am also disappointed and a little angry that the Wii was left out, we all know that the PC and PS3 are coming, but as always Wii are left out (see what I did there) Probably it’s because of all the features that said version lacks, but I’m kinda used to it by now. But if Activision wants to make me happy RELEASE THE PROMISED DLC MAPS!!!!
I kinda lost my point, I really liked what I saw about Elite
    that’s all

  • James Kading

I was wondering as too the email I think im using two total ..
    gmail
    then xbl is live
I thinnk I signed up with my gmail account but
not sure which email to check out. Any Idea ?

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

From the start, Wii was not announced to be supported by Elite. I am guessing it’s because Nintendo is starting a hardware transition shortly, or there may not be enough Wii players to make it worth building the infrastructure. So it will be interesting to see if the Wii U has COD and if it does how Elite will or will not tie into it.

Also, what is your source on “promised DLC for the Wii?” Because all I could find were quite the opposite:
    http://www.destructoid.com/black-ops-for-wii-patched-future-dlc-in-question-196637.phtml

Who promised DLC on the Wii, and when?

  • Tony

Hey Dan. I watched the 30 minute video and I didnt hear anybody mention about zombie stats. Could you consider putting this into Elite because in my opinion, it would connect many more players. I remember for Call of Duty:World at War there had been a website to count mulitplayer and zombie stats and I always looked at it to see the other players out there and to compare zombie stats like headshots and revives. So with that being said, once again could look into this as being part of Elite?

  • Jimmy Moceri

This looks great, BUT… I feel like all this massive stat-tracking etc will hinder game performance (lag, etc.) I feel like Black Ops is the laggiest (not to mention worst) CoD that I’ve played and I can only attribute it to this crazy ridiculous stat tracking (and perhaps the Theatre). My point is, I hope it’s accounted for and thought about…

  • Aes

Great walk-trough but this is only making me want on the beta sooner (stomps foot).  I signed up for beta early but guess not early enough to be let in, in the first wave of beta testers.
    xbox gamer tag: NotSoMuch

  • Jkooistra2004

Ah, and there goes Activision again. Or Beachhead to be more precise.

Why are PC gamers being deliberately discriminated again?
Didn’t the crap that happened with IWNet, and the less-then-perfect launch of Black Ops clearly show that the QA needs to be ramped up?
It took two month for BlOps to be playable on the PC due to really crappy port optimizing.
Don’t you people learn? I expect the launch of Elite for the PC will be just as crappy. Lots of lag due to unoptimized coding, lots of lost data because the API was never tested for the PC. And probably lots of hacking too because, due to lack of PC testing, glaring security holes in the API will be discovered after launch.

Activision: Made big by a loyal PC fanbase and now repaying that loyalty with 3rd rate citizen treatment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/juliocm Julio César Mendoza

I’m pretty sure I read it before the launch, so it’s kinda hard to find it now, but I’m pretty sure that the zombie map that is not on the disc was said to be downloadable, but whatever is not that I’m getting mad or something, I know what I bought, and I’m happy with it

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

You can take it as discrimination, or you can take it for what it actually is: A live beta of a service that is being built in front of your eyes. Things are going to change as they go. That is the nature of a beta — it’s not a final product. Issues appear and need to be dealt with. You try to do too much at once, everything falls down, so keeping control of the scope of the project is imperative. That is the reality of what you are seeing: a plan that needs to change organically to meet the needs of the project itself.

I have never built a system as large or complicated as Elite, but I have been on teams when critical software tools were being built from the ground up and needed to serve millions of people. Maybe that’s why “hold on, change of plans” did not strike me as unusual — nor did I take it as a personal offense, as you seem to have done.

You can be angry about nothing or you can be understanding about reality. I’d recommend the latter.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Not to worry — the stats are sent to Elite AFTER each match. The servers running Elite are not the same servers running Black Ops itself. It’s a complementary system.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I don’t know if Zombie stats are going to be tracked or not. Right now, in the version of the beta I’m using, they are not. It might be something they add later — they are open to user suggestions.

  • Jkooistra2004

I do understand the nature of a beta, and that they change. What I don’t understand is that they exclude an entire community. And a community most likely to encounter all kinds of bugs in beta due to all kind of different setups.

If you do a proper beta you’d take a representative of every community the beta applied to to iron out all the kinks in all the different systems.
What you now get is a beta aimed at
    1) Xbox
    2) PS3

That means most bugs will indeed be ironed out for the consoles. A system with one blueprint. What will happen on release though is that the PC portion of Elite will be either horribly slow, horribly buggy and probably open to all kind of unforseen hacks and glitches.
Most of wich could have been solved had the PC community been involved in beta.

So once we go live I expect the following situations likely to happen:
    1) Everyone launches at the same time.
Xbox & PS3 will work as expected. The PC community will suffer due to badly optimizations, bugs and other unforseen things.

    2) Xbox & PS3 will launch, PC will be delayed for another ‘beta’ aimed at the PC portion

I hope you like dealing with an angry PC community then. But then again, the PC community might’ve gotten used to Activision treating them as 3rd rate citizens.

In both cases the PC community will probably be barred from any real-prize competitions due to the buggy/glitchy performance of Elite untill it is resolved.

But you know what irks me personally the most? That I never get a straight answer, or anyone else in the PC community ever gets a straight answer.

    - Why is the PC community being excluded from the beta? For what reason?
I know you can’t answer that question, and I really hope that Beachhead will be inclined to answer it. But seeing the history of the CoD forums, and the general (un)awareness of it’s community mangers when it comes to the PC gaming community I won’t hold my breath.

And I don’t take this as a personal insult, thankyouverymuch.
The fact remains that so far the PC community has been receiving less then optimal support on both MW2 & BlOps, and it seems like Elite is going the same way. Not really confidence inspiring is it?

I have to say tho. That so far you, Dan, have been the only one to respond to any of the posted remarks or tweets. For this I salute you.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I have asked for the official answer, but honestly, I think it’s that they were biting off more than they could chew, and rather than choke, they decided not to swallow. That’s a bad analogy when extended, but you get the idea. It makes sense that things will change, quickly, almost randomly. But officially, I have not heard.

  • Jkooistra2004

Well at least thanks for answering and trying to get an official statement.

That possible answers is still very unsatisfactory and only reinforces my take that the PC launch will suffer because of it. If they don’t have the resources to include us in the beta now, then how will they manage resources during launch when it becomes clear lots of stuff still needs to be fixed for the PC.
It will degrade the overall experience for us PC users.

  • vasito

Well Im sure all the PC community by now is giving Activision Call of duty and Boby cotik

    A BIG FUCKIN

    FUCK YOU ALL

  • Ghost_Leader

Yet again,THANK YOU Activision for ignoring the PC community!Ever since Modern Warfare 2′s launch you’ve been showing your “support”(or lack thereof) for the PC community.Jkooistra2004 clearly pointed a lot of important issues and all he got were some loose answers.Yes,we know you’re sorry and that it’s a beta and you’re still working on it,but give us a straight answer! Why are you ignoring the PC community again?  I WILL take it as a discrimination, because it’s happening for THE THIRD TIME.At least your main competitor this year  actually shows support for us,the PC gamers.Your games may sell well on consoles, but you won’t win the PC community that way.

So, because the beta invite I requested shortly after E3 for PC is now void, i tried to register for the PS3 beta. The website tells me I need to link my PSN account, which i’ve tried like 30 times but it keeps telling me that it can’t verify my account details. 0_o cod elite does not like me.

  • Guest

It’s a good thing I’m not a PC retard who thinks shooters are better on the computer than on a PS3 or XBOX.

  • BlackDeath2121

same thing for me anyone know how to fix it

  • chris

is the the beta still running is it  going to be in beta till november for 360?

  • Pwn3dun00b

hey guys, thanks for excluding the largest group of dedicated gamers on the planet from a major beta test!  go to hell, please and thank you

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Beta is still underway. PS3 has yet to be implemented, but it’s still part of the plan.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I’m not sure if that’s sarcasm or if I should start digging.

You do not say what segment of gamers you represent. Are you an angry PS3 gamer or an angry PC gamer? If the former, hang in there, PS3 beta is coming. If the latter, read this: http://oneofswords.com/2011/08/what-mw3-dedicated-servers-could-mean-to-call-of-duty-elite/

No, PS3 data is not live yet. Give it some time, they will announce when they have incorporated PS3 data.
