COD Elite: 2 million beta signups and counting

by Dan on June 13, 2011

Several people have asked me how many people have signed up for the Call of Duty Elite beta. I just got the number back, and it blew my mind. More than 2 million gamers have signed up at callofduty.com/elite so far — and they hit that number in less than two weeks. That should give the dev team at Beachhead plenty to work with to kick off the beta, which officially starts July 14.

The official start of the beta is a month away, so there’s still plenty of time for you to sign up. When the studio head at Beachhead said this would be a live beta, he was not kidding — your participation really can make a difference in how Elite evolves. And don’t be discouraged by the big number, thinking you shouldn’t bother because they already have enough people — two million volunteers among 30 million Call of Duty players is a small amount. More would be even better. Once you’ve signed up, just watch your email inbox for an invite.

If you want the latest info on Call of Duty Elite, I am keeping one big article up to date with the latest facts. If you’re confused by rumors of what’s free and what’s not, don’t worry — just read this.

Thank you for the update, Dan. Last week Activision said 1 million signed up in the five days the beta registration page was open, making this number pretty substantial. Still eagerly awaiting news of the “top Hollywood talent” for the video series as well as what else a paid subscription will get me.

I already received an email saying “You’re Invited to beta test Call of Duty Elite”, but the email was blank. I clicked to view in browser, but the same thing happened.

Some people were sent notices asking “would you like to sign up?” And that was likely because you already registered at callofduty.com or something.

Looks like your email client blocked the images, but if you’ve already signed up for the beta, that’s all that message was. It won’t actually start until July 14. You haven’t missed anything.  :)

I think that info won’t be revealed for a few more months. They said late summer they’d probably be ready to talk about the premium stuff.

That is most likely why I received the email, but it does not load properly even when i try opening it out of the email client. Just a heads up.

I can’t wait to know if I got accepted into the beta or not. One month seems too long! Thanks for the reply!

I made it in to beta but how long does it last

As I understand Activision’s MW3 strategy, hackers will quickly overwhelm Steam’s obsolete VAC technology, forcing players to pay an additional annual fee to play on honest servers.

In this way, Activision will leverage the cheaters to help generate cash flow.

I am relieved to tell you that you do not understand Activision’s MW3 strategy.

As long as they need data. There is no hard end date that I am aware of, but I suspect it will go down shortly before MW3 so they can make the final preparations on a closed system rather than an open beta.

    Yes.
