First Black Ops commercial: Kobe & Kimmel

by Dan on November 4, 2010

The first commercial for Call of Duty: Black Ops has hit the web. The name of the spot is “There is a Soldier in All of Us.” It was created by TBWA/Chiat/Day and was just posted by Advertising Age, which you need to register to see, but the article is worth reading. Meanwhile, I got the embed code for you:

Yes, that’s Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Kimmel firing off military-grade weaponry with their callsigns written on them (“Mamba” and “Proud n00b” respectively, in case you missed them) — a clear nod to the ability for players to put their own logos on their weapons in Black Ops.

I suspect this will cause controversy — some people will say “you’re glorifying violence” and other people will see it as “I guess we never grow out of playing army men.” It’s clearly a fantasy spot and I don’t have a problem with it — it made me smile. And again, love that soundtrack. Add your thoughts below…

This ads freakin great! And you totally nailed it, FPS’s are this generations version of playing army men, war, guns, cops and robbers, nerf, and water guns. Kids have shot each other in games since the invention of the gun and before that, they pretended to kill each other with swords.

Nor does it compel those parents to do so. This ad does not change the fundamental parent/child relationship or the responsibilities therein, so…why bring this up here?

  • Garenm

Dan – seriously, this is the best commercial for a video game that I’v ever seen. It may be the best commercial I’ve ever seen, period.

  • Joe

This commercial needs to be pulled ASAP. I hope the parent watch guard organizations are working on this. Both Kobe’s and Kimmel’s agents needs to be fired as well for getting them involved in an advertisement that shows obviously underage kids shooting guns. Pretty disturbing.

  • Thatguy

He Was using that as a way to bring up a point, dont look too much into it. he said that players COULD range from pree teens to whatever, so your kinda looking at the wrong point.

  • ThatGuy

Please dont be Stupid. you wont suceed. Call of duty: modern warfare 2 became the highest grossing form of entertainment first few days. and black ops is only going to increase that.

  • jake

hey dude treyarch sux at making cod just look at WaW and just to let you know ive played black ops and its just as bad as WaW

  • Guttavill

He might have meant the first amendment protects the game maker’s right to explore and exploit whatever violent themes they see fit.

  • Dick

But isn’t that Mr. Jarhead or Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gylenhaal at the end of the commercial?

  • Petec3217

it does glorify violence to some extent the whole video game does …. but do i care no its a fun video game and if some people take it too literally and freak out theres not much you can do with them because they are going to freak out whether it was this commercial or not

  • Petec3217

If you don’t want your kid to see or play this ” M” rated game, don’t frickin’ purchase it for them. Oh, and don’t :
Allow them to go over their friends house
Allow them to watch cable t.v. nor DVDs
Sing songs like: London Bridges, Rock a-bye baby, Ring around the rosy, etc.
If you grew up with all of this crap, and you’re not on a roof picking off people, you’re mentally o.k. If you think your child is influenced by all of this, then they need help, and not a video game.

Awesome. You said it. Damn, RIGHT on!

I love this commercial. The look on the face of the girl with the shotgun after she blows the door is priceless.

  • Guest

It looks like an In-n-Out Burger uniform, but maybe not.

  • Hugh

I was the businessman “wall Street” in the commercial – I am a gamer pilgrimsix, and it was an honor to be in the worlds biggest and most successful game and commercial!!
