MW3: $775 million in 5 days

by Dan on November 17, 2011

The game is out. The reviews are in. And now, the money is counted. Well, at least the first five days’ worth.

Modern Warfare 3 made $775 million in less than a week.  That’s higher than Black Ops’ $650 million and MW2′s $550 million. It’s the biggest entertainment launch in history…for the third year running. It was the top-selling game at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart.

According to Microsoft, 3.3 million people played it on Xbox Live on day one, for 7 million combined man-hours. That’s a new record.

Activision, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, Raven, and everybody else who worked hard to make sure this game lived up to incredibly high expectations…you may now all drop the mic and walk off the stage.

To all their own, but personally, I find it amazing that this game continues to bring in that much money, for a product that is essentially the same with new maps and tweaks here and there since CoD4.

Call of Duty is still growing and larger than ever in its 8th year. On pace to outsell COD 4 next week. To me it seems like MW2 and Black Ops was a lot of people’s first introduction to Call of Duty and online gaming, and they haven’t gone back and played the earlier iterations of Call of Duty. For example

Regardless of all the internet hate it gets, and if all those people truly did boycott the game, there is lots of newcomers coming in.

Got around playing the MW3 single player campaign. Wow, it was great. Sorry for being the 4,693 + jaded butthole that tweeted you shit about how the reveal trailer sucked earlier in May.

LOL. As long as you enjoyed it when you played it, that was the developers’ goal.

I do wonder how far it can grow; everything has a natural peak in appeal and interest. But I am sure that whenever that day comes, there will be a lot of people on the internet who treat it as some sort of personal victory that they personally helped bring about, rather than the nature of the world around them.

I played the campaigns of both MW2 and Black Ops and to suggest that it’s the same thing seems crazy to me, but as you say, to each their own!

I truly Love Call Of Duty. Every year they come up with something new. Which is always great

I would never have thought that CoD would have gotten this big back when I was playing CoD 2 and 3. Hell, when MW was announced I was actually bummed that they were bringing the setting to the modern day.

I should clarify, the multiplayer is where I spend most of my time in-games, and that is where I felt it all too similiar. But thanks for the reply. Good Day!
