Double XP in Black Ops & MW2 this weekend

by Dan on October 28, 2011

If you aren’t following MW3 on Facebook, you probably didn’t see Robert Bowling’s video about how tokens work in the new Prestige Shop, and you therefore missed a very big piece of news: This weekend, in preparation for all those goodies that you can unlock in the MW3 Prestige Shop, there will be double XP in both MW2 and Black Ops. This is the first time in franchise history that two games have offered double XP simultaneously; usually the studios agree to share the spotlight as individual titles. So you get to pick either or both this time.

UPDATE: To clarify: The Prestige Shop in MW3 rewards you with a token for achieving a Prestige level in any of the previous four games — COD4, WaW, MW2, or Black Ops. That’s four tokens max, one for each game in which you prestiged (no matter how many times you prestiged within that game). So for instance, I have prestiged four or five times in Black Ops; I get one token for that. Since that’s a token I never really expected to get in the first place and wasn’t the reason I was prestiging anyway, I call that a win. When MW3 comes out, you will earn a token for each time you prestige within MW3 — but that’s a new system for the new game.

UPDATE 10/28: Robert Bowling has written a detailed forum post about this today. He notes the Prestige Tokens will be awarded for PS3 and 360, as there is no way to track prior PC or Wii data.

I will be running a Call of Duty Playing With Swords event Friday night (game and platform to be determined), but…clear the decks and cancel your Halloween party plans. Whether you prefer MW2 or Black Ops, you’re going to be ranking up this weekend!

You should at least get a few games of WaW in, just for fun :)

Really Prestige tokens? Wow I wished I prestiged more than Black ops! or reach max level on WaW & MW2 (I did on my other account :))

If only the Double XP were available on CoD4 and WaW, too. Then again, those games haven’t been playable on Xbox Live for the last six months. XD

Also the game fuel for double xp  isnt even availible outside the us. Unfair dont you think?

I’d hardly call it unfair. Mountain Dew as it is in the US isn’t available worldwide. Administering the promotion across multiple worldwide brands would be a marketing and production nightmare.

Also, the codes only provide minuscule amounts of double XP time, which won’t make much difference to your progression in the long run – it’s just a cool bonus for fans of CoD and Dew (Call of Dew-ty? Anyone? Bueller?).

It’s not like people are getting free Prestige ranks and exclusive guns/equipment – they’re just ranking up slightly faster than you. And if you think about it, unlocks don’t mean much when it comes down to pure gaming skill. It’s a non-issue. =)

Agreed. Just bought WaW from Steam, and downloading tonight! So stoked!

COD4 is barely playable on PSN. Half the time I’m in a lobby that has hyperspeed sprinting, persistent real-time UAV or a guy who is invulnerable.

Agreed. In other words, if you shoot me for 15 minutes and I don’t shoot you, it doesn’t matter that I have double XP. Skill trumps soda.

Thanks for the info. I know you get fed up with all the PC players here, but do you know if the double xp weekend will cover the PC platform too? I mean, the point of the double XP is to get players to prestige in order to get extra tokens in MW3, somthing we PC players are left out of.

Boo @ no prestige tokens for PC.  :(  I can understand non-Steam copies being untrackable, but if they really put some minor effort into it, they can track Prestiging on Steam titles, or atleast the playtime spent on those titles.  Didn’t WaW and Black Ops store info on the Treyarch servers?  At very minimum, they can give a Prestige coin for those that own PC copy on Steam.

Double XP is on PC, but the tokens are not, per Robert’s post above.

  • StrongBad

I just checked, and that’s incorrect. I played a TDM in MW2 and got 20 kills, it gave me ~2000 XP. Double XP is NOT on for MW2 PC.

Double XP was supposed to be for all platforms, to my understanding. It definitely is up and running on Black Ops PC — I tried it Friday.

If it’s an MW2 issue, drop him a line, ’cause complaining here ain’t gonna do anything.

  • StrongBad

Trust me, I have dropped Robert a line, I’ve mentioned it on the official forums and the Steam forum too. Still no double XP on MW2 for PC. Sorry about being so negative on your blog.

DoubleXP on PC never showed up at any point during the weekend for MW2.

I can see not giving prestige tokens for MW1 on PC as they screwed us by not even putting prestige in our copy of the game, but not doing so for MW2 or Black Ops? Claiming they can’t track it is just lazy. On the one hand they pat themselves on the back by saying their anti-cheat is just fine, then say they won’t reward PC users because people can cheat and can’t prove they did it legit. The 3 hours of time I have logged at the Mt. Dew XP site? Apparently not going to get to use that either. No Elite. No ranked dedicated servers. Pretty much everything they have hyped about this game is only for consoles and we have to pay the same price for the game and more for DLC? The good news just keeps on coming on a game I pre-ordered and now just don’t care about.
