Activision Indie Games Competition 2 starts now

by Dan on October 3, 2011

Phase one of the Activision Independent Games Competition has concluded and the winners — Dstroyed and Rigonauts: Broadside — have received their prizes. Now it’s time for phase two! An official press release went out today, saying entries are being accepted any time between now and the end of the year.

Once again, indie developers are invited to submit a concept or a working prototype, and two two winners get $175,000 and $75,000 in funding to finish their games. And once again, Activision does NOT own your IP if you enter. There was some confusion last time so it’s worth noting.

The only notable change I can see: This time, the judging of entries will be handled by the folks at IndieCade. Their next conference happens to take place next week, so if you want more info on them or the competition, that’s the place to be.

Ready to go? Here’s the entry form. Good luck — I look forward to interviewing the winners again!

It’s great to see Activision doing this again.

As an aside, I love that Activision logo and I’m glad they haven’t changed it over the years (maybe they dropped a rainbow here and there). I look at that logo and think of Pitfall and the Ghostbusters C64 game.

They dropped the rainbow, but there was another Activision logo for a few years in the 90s. http://www.mobygames.com/game/pc-booter/ghostbusters/screenshots/gameShotId,160192/ It wasn’t around for too long before they returned to the classic logo, and I’m glad they did too.

Someone asked a few months back why we hadn’t changed that “old logo” and I thought…man, that’s like McDonald’s or Ford changing their logos. When you have something so stable, timeless, and recognizable, you don’t change it.  The companies that revise their logos every few years are the ones looking for the right fit for the long term, and they’ll stop when they find it. Activision is fortunate to have found their fit!

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that logo before, but then again, I wasn’t really playing videogames in the 90s. Interesting.
