One of Swords: The WoW Guild

by Dan on February 18, 2011

Careful podcast listeners probably heard Hugh accidentally mention plans for an official One of Swords World of Warcraft guild. This is something we’d been talking about quietly for a while, since several people have said they’d like to play with us. I am already an altaholic, so I figured this might be fun. I went looking for a PvE server that was located in the middle of the country that would minimize lag issues for anyone interested. And we found it, with an bonus in-joke.

When I was the EIC of the WoW official magazine, I hired Hugh to write a story about the lore of Doomhammer, the mace that Thrall wields. He wrote the story…and the story got bumped. Then got bumped again. It finally was printed, roughly a year after he wrote it, much to our collective surprise. So…no brainer there. We’re setting up on Doomhammer-US.

I have formed an Alliance guild there called One Of Swords, and even though I didn’t really want to call my character “Oneofswords” too, I did anyway, for a simple fact that Kat pointed out: If I didn’t claim the name, someone else would. Kat is “Celticat” and Hugh is “Disterbakov.”

No, that's not Devon. But the resemblance is striking.

This is purely a social guild. Do not be tempted to transfer your high-level characters; do not change your WoW lifestyle. We’re not going to be doing serious raiding; we’re not going to be requiring attendance. Be whatever you want to be, do whatever you want to do — do not worry about what kind of tradeskill we need or what kind of character we can use. Play for fun and we’ll all get together. Ideally I’d like to do Playing With Swords events every so often — you know, “everybody show up at this time and we’ll run Battlegrounds for a few hours together.” Or maybe, “hey, let’s go run this instance or dungeon together, for fun.” That’s about as far as it goes. It’s a way to have a public WoW presence without messing up my existing vibe.

Wanna join? Cool, you’re in. Just send me a note in-game or use the Guild Finder and look for us. I’ll work out a time to invite you in.

I wouldn’t mind re-activating my Battle.net account to play more WoW for this reason, but I would probably be one of the most clueless people on the team as it’s been a couple years since I really played, and I wasn’t even all that knowledgeable about the game to start.

I have zero familiarity with raids, instances, ect. I was only into doing basic quests and following markers on the map along with the help of various add-ons through Curse Client.

…and that’s how I play. I do not do high-level raids, I usually just do PvE missions. And if you have been away for a while, you might find that a lot of the old add-ons are now baked right into the game. Finding PvE quests is a breeze now — Blizzard basically looked at QuestHelper and said “Hey, we can do that!”

Waiting for a little free time so I can continue leveling up my pally. But I’m still planning on transferring my main when the time is right – need a change of scenery. :)

Hugh should keep his name as “pending” – it fits his personality perfectly.

I’m new to WoW too ( less than 20 hrs.) and I know very little about mmorps. From what I’ve seen, the latest expansions have made WoW a lot more accessible to casual players. Should be a good time!

@ Dan – I’m in a friends guild already, but I can create a new toon on the server you guys choose right? Or can I use my already exisiting character on a new server?

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

You would need to create a new one on Doomhammer (unless that’s where your friend is, of course). You can’t use the same character on two different “realms” so you would have to create an alternate (aka “alt”) on ours. You can transfer characters, but that requires a fee and your friend would be pissed!

It’s a question of whether you like doing the same stuff over again, or if there is a second character class you might like to play.

I made a new character and I’ll be watching for you or Kat to hit you up for a guild invite.

Just send me an in-game message so I know to friend you and find you.

  • Hugh

I’m “Disterbakov.” A level 1 Worgen warrior. I’ve played like 250 days of WoW and never played a plate class or tanked. Should be fun.

I’m not sure when I’ll be around, as my account is currently inactive. But I’ll come back soon…

I hope this doesn’t lead to more WoW talk on the podcast. General talk about the game is okay, but the lists of characters on servers is excrutiatingly boring to a non-WoW guy like me.

Good point. Let’s take a poll of what games we don’t like and remove them from the show! I could use an hour of silence every Thursday! =)

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Well aware of it. The podcast is not going to be a guild podcast. I plugged the existence of the guild on this week’s show near the end, but that’s it.

I don’t dislike WoW, I dislike lists of characters and classes on various servers that don’t mean anything unless you’re part of the conversation, it seems to me. There have been two times that it’s happened, I’m just letting Dan know that it’s extremely dry to an outsider..

You’re right. I shouldn’t have been passive aggressive in my joking.

Sent you an in game mail, same name as my main on Baelgun, “GooseJuggler” Looking forward to this.

I’m in. I’ll look for you in game. You usually play on Sundays, right?
