One of Swords Podcast 057: Conflict is Coming

by Dan on February 24, 2011

This week’s show is…hard to describe, and to be honest, it might even be difficult for some people to hear. After months of teasing, Hugh finally reveals the Superman II story he’s been saving…and it’s likely going to be offend some people, so consider this fair warning. I think it’s ultimate proof that It Sucks To Be Hugh. We also answer reader mail and ramble a bit, so prepare yourself for Castlevania, True Crime repercussions, the future of Police Quest, classic controllers for modern systems, an audio farewell to Bizarre, ninjas, the One of Swords WoW guild, the effects of PS3 hacking, and why Hugh may never be allowed to go to an event with Kat and Dan, ever ever ever.

  • UPDATE: I said on this show that Activision owned the IP for Tenchu and Bloody Roar. I got that wrong — Activision did own the Tenchu IP for a few years, but sold it to From Software in 2004. As for Bloody Roar, it was just a North American rights deal for publishing and distributing of two games, but not, as I stated on this week’s show, an IP ownership. Sorry about that; I’ll put it in the planner for next week to correct.

After listening to Hugh and his Superman 2 beatdown, I want to go home and hug my kids.

It almost makes me not want to have children.

I’m definitely committed to buying Hugh’s book after his story. I demand some sort of “signed copy”, exclusive content preorder.

That totally sounds like Hugh singing in the Decathlon commercial.

      Dan,

1). You & Kat seem like you would be great parents.

2). Hugh, my favorite part of your story was hearing about your dad. He seemed to do what he could with what he was given.

It sounds weird, but I did see the humour in Hugh’s “Superman 2″ story – the way that kids can block out terrible things in their lives because they’re focussed on something like a movie, a song or a game which makes life better. It’s bleakly ironic humour, but it is there – being knocked out just to see a movie is commitment to the geek cause far and beyond what I could summon myself.

‘Living well is the best revenge’ is the message that I took away from Hugh’s story.

One piece you left out of the PS3 hacker story was the reason why Sony removed Linux from the system in the first place. Hackers found an exploit in the Other OS option that allowed them to play pirated games. So for them to claim that they opened the system to pirated software in revenge for removing Linux is wrong. They were always out to steal games.
