One of Swords Podcast 055: Human Centipede of Self-Loathing

by Dan on February 9, 2011

Hello ladies. Look at your man. Now back to Hugh Sterbakov. Now back to your man. Now back to Hugh. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to take that bullet for your gender? Instead, just in time for Valentine’s Day, we’ve got Hugh’s wife Lisa on the show to discuss her feelings on girl gamers, how gaming constitutes quality time in a relationship, the do’s and don’t's of gaming & dating, and the best ways to get your significant other interested in virtual worlds. Better still, she tells embarrassing stories about Hugh, who then yammers on with me about the Annie Awards, old fighting games, Marilyn Manson, Blizzcon, investor calls, and — regrettably — his ass. Feel the love!

An uncensored f-bomb, MST3K references, an interview with a sassy-sounding lady and a story about a painful dump? Terrific show, guys! Now all we need is that Superman II story…

I also recommend the new You Don’t Know Jack game. I picked it up last night and is still as funny as I remember it.

Let me tell you how many times I edited and re-edited that interview due to the technical issues. It took, not kidding, about five hours to put this show together.

Personally I would like to just let the cursing fly (I love vulgarity), but I don’t think it’s appropriate for what I represent. You know…people will say “ooh, Activision swears” or something stupid like that and hold it against me.

Listening at work and this definitely had some laugh out loud moments. Great job as always.

You sounded a little annoyed/tired in the outro. The show sounded great, though, for what it’s worth.

Regarding Lisa’s point about hot chicks and Comic Con, I was arguing with my wife the other day about “girl gamers” and her contention was that girls who play video games extensively, have an inherent desire to get attention from boys. Specifically, she mentioned that most girls that we know, who are really into gaming, aren’t especially attractive. At the risk of being banished to the couch that night, I retorted with the “hot chicks at Comic Con” argument.

I was unable to convince her that perfectly normal girls/women enjoy video games without subconscious desires to resolve “daddy issues” or male neglect.

She likes Rock Band… so I will continue to chip away at her inhibitions through the underestimated music genre.

I did not bring it up on the show but I am not a fan of the term “girl gamer.” I prefer “gamer” and being gender neutral. I don’t think being or not being female really affects your ability to play, discuss, or enjoy games.

I know some women take pride in the term, as Lisa does, but I will never be able to really appreciate that outlook due to my own plumbing.

All true. I’m going to discuss the destructive nature of “gamer” labels in my next article.

I found this while snooping around the internets for info:

In thinking more about it, I think there might actually be a difference between a girl who games and a “girl gamer”. I think the “girl gamer” title really goes to the hot chicks who enjoy standing out in the crowd. I think there are a lot more gamers who just happen to be girls. Those girls don’t need the female qualifier. Lisa Sterb. :)

      What a fun podcast!

And did Hugh & Lisa just out Mila Kunis as a WoW player? Or former player, anyway?

Or is that a different Mila in the story?

This sounds like a good excuse to bring you back on the show again.

    • Hugh

Wait, WHY should she come on the show again? LOL…

    • Guest

I guess we can’t post links here, but go to YouTube and search for “Mila Kunis WarCraft”

Ah, thank you! I didn’t realize that.

      Very cool. :)

Can we have some sort of game show or quiz with both wives? Couples vs couples?
