ZOMG hacked!

by Dan on August 17, 2010

Yes, the site was not working right for a few hours this morning. Seems someone found a sneaky way to redirect traffic from my site to a crappy MP3 site.

Now, I’m not doing crazy numbers here; OneOfSwords is not even a year old and it’s growing basically by word of mouth. I’m not really sure why someone would want to take my fairly modest traffic and apply it to their site. it could have been intentionally malicious — someone who didn’t agree with my Kotick quote research piece, maybe — or it could be someone who was actually hired to do it by the redirected target site, to boost traffic.

If that’s the case, I would think that the simple fact that you need to hijack sites to send traffic to your crappy MP3 site would mean a) you’ve proven you do indeed run a site so crappy that you need to pay hacker kiddies to bring you scraps of traffic and b) you are going to alienate anybody who was trying to get to the site you hijacked in the first place. I mean, is anybody going to say “Hey, I wonder what stupid nonsense Dan’s up to this morning and…oh look, Best of Oumguil is now available!” and start clicking? Say what you will about Activision’s business practices, but it’s never been that stupid.

So, in other words, I am here to officially squash the rumors: Oumguil is not appearing in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

BTW, much love to my hosts, InMotion Hosting, for their usual awesome help. I’ve been working with them for over a decade on all my personal and professional sites and I cannot say enough nice things about them. They’re on Twitter if you have any questions.

Keep calm and carry on.

Sucks that you had to deal with that. Hope everything gets straightened out fully. Are you still running into any issues?

My hopes and dreams for the the next Guitar Hero game have now been squashed. No Omguil, no… who are they anyway?

Glad to see things up and running again.

Damn! And I was getting all excited about Oumguil.

    Oh, well….

More likely then not Dan, is that it was an automated bot that scans for unpatched WordPress blogs and exploits them. I doubt you were targeted specifically. Make sure you are keeping it and any plugins you have updated.

I check the updates for my installation DAILY. I am ridiculously vigilant about keeping the site and all its various plugins up to date and I don’t leave plugins installed that I’m not actively using. My only guess is that it’s a very fresh exploit.

Good to hear. In addition, you want to make sure you have file permissions set correctly. There are plug-ins out there such as WP Security Scan that will check your settings and let you know if anything is not correct.

    See: http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

Best of luck, and keep up the excellent work.

Thanks, I will check out Security Scan and give it a whirl — was unaware of that so I do appreciate the advice.

Always wondered what idiot goes to a site that hijackes them from another site, refered them by spam e-mail, or offers pirated content and willingly trusts them with their financial info.

Hope you or your ISP at least reported the incident to the proper authorites. Might feel like spitting in the wind but cyber crime units can’t act on violations if they don’t know about them.

The same idiots that put ads on CraigsList for their F-350 and pepper it with keywords like “300zx” and “convertible”, ’cause y’know if I’m looking for a 300zx and stumble across the F-350 ad I might just say, “hey, I was looking for a sleek sports car, but this truck is awful cool.”

I got hacked once… once… Now I have to apply cream twice a day. Sucks.

I am glad you got everything back to normal. Now back to podcasting with Hugh. Stat!

Yet another fine example of why we should all be ashamed of humanity =P. Ether way i hope things are better now, no one should have to deal with that.
