Where do DJ Hero tracks come from?

by Dan on August 31, 2010

Well, when a dance track and a hip-hop track like each other very much…

Actually, it’s a little bit more involved than that. While the origins of a DJ Hero mashup are pretty much what you would expect — DJs testing out little scratch mixes to see if their audio instincts are correct and two songs can blend — it gets a little more technical from there. And then, weirdly, goes back to the world of analog again. I visited FreeStyleStudios in London to get the scoop.

In case you didn’t recognize him, that’s the same Josh Grigg from UK garage/dub/bass sensations Pirate Soundsystem. And DJ Blakey is a UK DMC champ (great video of his absolutely sick winning mix from 2004 is here). The FreeStyleGames crew walks the walk.

DJ Hero 2 ships October 19.

So when are we going to be seeing you as a playable character Dan? DJ Hero 3 maybe?

Dude, they want to SELL games.

    That would sell games :P

I would be all over this game if DJ OneofSwords was a playable character. Even if you were just a DLC

Alas, no — it was a one-off hoodie, and they use good music in DJ Hero 2 anyway. :)
