Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 DLC returns!

by Dan on July 2, 2010

You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to write that headline.

Last year, Activision released a DLC pack for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 featuring five new characters — Psylocke, Carnage, Black Panther, Magneto, and Cable — and said the day that it went online (November 5) it was only going to be available until December 31. Some press outlets reported that very important detail, but for whatever reason, most did not. So when the DLC disappeared at the announced time (if not a little before, due to some PS3 hiccup), everybody accused Activision of lying, cheating, and generally being Grinchy, when it was just the end of a biz deal. Admittedly, it was lousy timing — everybody who got the game for the holidays hit the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in January to find none of the DLC they’d heard about the month prior. It was super frustrating, made even worse when you consider the DLC came with Achievements that people couldn’t even get, and that people who had the DLC could not play with people who did not. Oof. And I’d just started the job, so it was lots of fun for me to walk into loud, angry questions about the situation, which I barely knew how to answer. I prepared ‘em for the worst: What’s done is done, and business is business. I didn’t have any reason to believe it would come back.

But it did. It’s back now, in fact. Details after the jump.

I can totally understand why people would want the DLC, if only just to do this.

But gamers weren’t just telling me they wanted the DLC back — they were telling Activision and Marvel too. And here’s proof that they both listened. There’s a post over at HeroHQ.com — which is Activision’s official forum for discussions about its Marvel games — that says the DLC is due back in a matter of days. Here are some choice quotes from admin Kalina:

We made our case (your fan support helped), begged, pleaded, cajoled and didn’t give up and were able to convince the ‘powers that be’ to bring MUA2 DLC back!! This is really happening.

In terms of timing, now that it’s been approved, we need to coordinate to get this back up on Xbox Live and PSN. As soon as I know definite timing, I will let you know.

And this is important – I want to make sure this is super clear from the beginning – all good things must come to an end and we are only allowed to have the MUA2 DLC back up through the end of 2010.  So there will be about a 6 month window to download the content again, and then it will be gone for good.  It’s not a strategy and not our choice, this is just what is allowed so I’m giving you all the advance notice I can.

Also noted in that post: There will not be a Gold Edition with the DLC baked right in to the disc. There were hopes, there were assumptions based on the fact that the original MUA had one, but not this time. I can live with that, after the drama that surrounded this whole thing. I’m just happy that the DLC will be back, and you’ll have six months to buy it, then forever to enjoy it. (Just to be safe? Don’t delay.)

UPDATE 7/1: It’s official: thee nightmare is over. From today until December 31, 2010, you can once again download the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Character & Sim Mission Pack with its five extra characters, and you can finally earn all the Achievements/trophies that go with it. It’s $9.99 for PS3 players and 800 Microsoft Points for 360 owners. Additionally, Juggernaut is available as a separate downloadable character — he’s apparently too big to fit in the digital download wrapper with all the other guys — for $1.99 or 160 MS Points.

Buy it again for the first time on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. And enjoy some preview videos of Psylocke and Magneto in action.

UPDATE 7/2: The last detail: What about DLC owners being able to play with non-DLC owners? Apparently there was a free fix for that all along, but it was removed from the online marketplaces as part of the original DLC removal. It’s back and it’s free. It’s available on PS3 under the name “Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Character Compatibilty Pack and, confusingly, on Xbox 360 as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Character & Sim Mission Pack Teaser.” I know — makes no sense to me either. But that is the download you need to make sure every MUA2 player can play with every other, whether they own the DLC or not. Excelsior!

UPDATE 7/2 part deux: Apparently all this good stuff is NOT on the PS3 yet — several people have reported that they can’t find it, and I can’t find it either (and I mistakenly thought that web listings were tied to their actual store, the way MS does it). I’ve got a request into the team for an ETA but with the holiday weekend, I’m guessing it might not be up until Tuesday’s PS Store update. Until then: Don’t worry, it’s not just you, and you’re not going crazy.

UPDATE 7/7: Well, Tuesday has come and gone and it wasn’t in the PlayStation Store update. You are still not going crazy. The PS3 DLC is inexplicably delayed. I don’t know exactly why. But I can confirm that it IS coming. Some folks on Activision’s support team are saying they don’t know “if or when” it will be available, but I’m digging deeper, and my sources assure me that PS3 DLC is coming back, it’s just delayed. I will stay on top of it and let you know the minute I get confirmation. Until then, all I can say is I’m sorry my hunch was wrong about Tuesday, I know this is not the straightforward happy ending you were promised, and I appreciate your patience while it gets sorted.

UPDATE 7/8: Okay, I have a fresh date for the PS3: Tuesday, July 20. This will be part of that day’s standard Store update. Sorry for the delay, PlayStation peoples, but it’s a-comin’.

UPDATE 7/20: I have checked and confirmed with Sony that the DLC should be reactivated today as part of the Store update. The Store update usually happens late in the day, afternoon/evening, and I’m writing this around 1pm, so I would not expect it for a few more hours.

UPDATE 7/22: GOOD GOD WHY WON’T IT DIE. Now it appears there’s a delay in the European PlayStation Store rollout. I thought it would be going up at roughly the same time, as most DLC seems to do. But the marketplaces are obviously independent and I do not know why it’s not there. This is a question for Sony in Europe, I’m afraid. I am still trying to find out info on this end, but with the Marvel team at the San Diego Comic-Con and it being an international question about someone else’s e-commerce site, I’m not expecting definitive news anytime soon.

UPDATE 8/15: Finally, the EU PS Store has it. We’re good. Go get it, go play it, and thank you for your patience!

UPDATE 12/28: Sony has removed the DLC from the US PlayStation Store a few days ahead of the date. (I don’t know why — that is a question for Sony, as it’s their store and the expiration date has not yet arrived.) Hope you got it. DLC for Xbox 360 is still available but, you know, if you want it, I would not put it off.

  • Googoo

    Good question

  • Jonah Price42

Is it still possible to get the dlc pack now that its 2011 I really want it.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

As the article above says, it’s no longer available.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

I’m sorry you’re upset, but it’s not like someone “lost the license” and didn’t know where they put it. Contracts expire, sometimes at awkward times. That’s not a question of doing legal homework, as you put it.

Screaming in caps about it won’t actually help, for what it’s worth. And the whole thing is over now anyway. It’s unfortunate that it got messy, but it’s also totally done.

  • ragman74

did you find out how yet?

  • ragman74

XBL shows the mission pack and juggernaut as teasers and will need to play multiplayer. I am still trying to figure out how to play as any of the added characters. FYI – also free to download.

  • N Sellick

just bought the game and seen the downloadable content in the add-on section of the ps3 store. i downloaded and my system said it was installed yet i cannot use or even see these charaters. Only 2 blanks spots show up on my team select menu, no juggernaut or carnage or any other downloadable character. idk what if anything there is to do. Plz respond cuz im goin nuts tryn to figure out what i gotta do to get these guys. ty.

  • Joeyfuller60

    i have the same prob

  • http://twitter.com/santi_espinoza Santiago Espinoza

is there a chance that this will go out in this year

  • Marvelico

I have had the game for a while, and just got the DLC, yet I can’t find the characters. What can I do? I notice that their sillhouetes aren’t in the team portrait, but there is two blank spots that say “LOCKED” when selecting a character. This is so frusterating!

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Not sure I understand what you mean by “just got the DLC” — it has not been available for sale since the end of December 2010.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

The DLC is no longer available and is not slated to return.

  • commanderjameson

I’m in the US and my brother is in Australia (they use the EU servers), 2 days ago i asked him to purchase both DLCs and we gameshared.  I also downloaded the compatibility packs as well.  I don’t see the characters or the missions in the simulator. Either UK DLCs dont work with the US version of mua2 or an update to the main code prevents you from using them.  No big deal for me, but my 5yo son doesn’t quite understand the reasoning of contracts and royalties etc.

  • bob

The DLC is free in the PSN store, but same problem as Marvelico installed and 2 blank spots that say locked.  and no other characters.

  • Shawn

hey i am pissed cause i just found out about the dlc pack i am a big fan of marvel  ultimate alliance and i saw all the previws for the dlc characters and its awesome so please try to renew the lisense please.

  • Osorio_sean

wait question is the dlc still on xbox live still on right now and i would know if i ever had xbox live but i dont and that was my whole reason to get xbox live and the points was for the dlc

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

As stated above, the DLC is no longer for sale.

  • http://oneofswords.com/ Dan (OneOfSwords)

Well, I’m not going to be much help when it comes to “gamesharing,” which is to say, piracy.

  • Derek

I saw the DLC also and downloaded it too. Its showing as free on xbox live but when you play the game the characters don’t show up just a couple of empty spots how do we fix this?

  • squeek

i down loaded the package and the jagarnaught but i was not able to use them why?

  • squeek

i totally agree i m starting to not like playstation network!

  • Kylecallis77

Playstation network sucks I paid to get on there just to get the characters now I can’t because there to lazy oh and thanks for making it look like I could get them with that stupid compatibility pack assholes!until I get the characters I will never pick up a card again

  • Greensleeves8734

when will these programmers and button pushers realize that Carnage is the most ruthless villian and people will pay money to play as a serial killer with a symbiote suit that has otherworldly powers *sigh*

  • Greensleeves8734

you hit home there Karl, this game is supposed to exceed MUA 1 and it does not come close. In fact, i would rather play the hellicarrier mission, which all you fanboys know is the first mission in the first game, than play any mission in this game. (just to get the perspective of good programming and a loyalty to the characters themselves)

The only real joy I got from MUA2 is kicking tail with the cajun Gambit. But then again, who is Gambit without his Rogue? Just another character they shouldve added. I hope when im done programming at college i can pitch ideas for games like this and then i could make the whole world happy.  I just feel that the publics’ opinion has been overlooked with this game.

postscript: To People wanting these characters, buy the pc version of marvel ultimate alliance 1, go to marvel mods.com and prepare to be amazed by some homebrew marvel characters done by some truly talented people. say thanks or kudos or whatever but seriously i have any character i ever wanted thanks to the marvel mod team. Again these mods are for the first game, but there is nothing wrong with that given it is a better game anyway.
Post postscript: modding does take a bit or talent, time and patience so remember to back up your files and always say thanks!:)

  • Itscharlesemail

Yes this is tru Dan but do you not see these ”true belivers”? Are they not worthy of such things? I wanted the DLC as well but it was not to be it seems that the MUA FRANCHISE dosent like making money.because i see see everyone looking for this dlc but its nowhere and that sucks for those who loved the game but couldnt get it at the time

  • Aechevarria2506

The fact this even happened is laughable. While many of the developers worked hard to get the extension, the executives at Activision only cared about the bottom line, and not about the long term happiness of the fans. X-Men Destiny is the perfect example of this. An underdeveloped, incomplete and poor product released early to make a quick buck and take advantage of the myriad of fans that support Marvel titles.  MUA 2 Gold Edition would of been a far better product than XMD, and a better use of a Marvel license in regards to fan/consumer happiness.

  • Rick

I know this whole thing is over and done with, but being as I just bought a PS3 a couple of months ago (including MUA 2) I need to express my irritation.  If the publisher can only offer the DLC for so long, whatever that’s fine, but then DON’T put trophies on the list that is based on that DLC.  It is just maddeningly frustrating that I will never be able to complete all the achievements in this game.  Disgusting (not to mention the game itself is underwhelming)

  • BigDC16

okay so i downloaded the dlc like a month ago and is says they are downloaded but i cant use them. what the hell?

  • BigDC16

yea i downloaded them from the xbox live market place a few days ago but i  cant use them
