Hands-on with the new GH:WoR controller

Friday, Activision confirmed the Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock title. Yesterday, Activision announced the new controller (and Gizmodo had the scoop). And today, I’ve got it in my hands. Join me for an informal video tour of the new axe.

    I never got the hang of the touchpad, though I am still trying to use it in GHVH on Expert. It was very useful for GHStudio, composing your own tracks and stuff.

    Were you actually upset about it? I mean, it didn't get in the way of me playing the way I wanted to play. I was never required to use it by the game.

    I already said this on youtube but maybe you can reply quicker here…Great video Dan. Just what I needed to know about the new guitar. I was wondering if it felt lighter then the previous versions since theres hallow parts of it. Im guessing they got rid of the touch strip on this version cause it would always break…at least mine did. nice ending too “ow ow ow…ow”

    It doesn't feel lighter, because it's all the same stuff inside, just concentrated into that center column. The wings are lightweight and removable, but you still need to put the wireless guts and batteries and Wiimote and all that stuff in there, so it's roughly the same weight.

    Considering some people just don't like Gamestop, are there any indications as to what other customizable bodies will be or what they'll cost?

    No, nothing about that has been revealed. I have asked and nobody wants to talk, if they know. The GameStop preorder is the only thing known so far.

    1st time I've seen a video of you. I know it has no bearing on the subject matter of the video, but I'm just curious, why do you look slightly to the right throughout most of the video? Is that where you have your notes or teleprompter. Sorry, just need to satisfy the OCD part of me :)

    It's okay. If you'll notice, in the opening scene, my eyes are fine — and then they snap out into Marty Feldman territory. I have a lazy eye but I can sometimes control it. For a three-minute straight video where I'm constantly shifting my focus, it's tough.

    That's a darn good question. While publishers are trying to change the impact of used game sales, they still need to work with retailers to sell the new ones. Promotional exclusives like this help keep that relationship going.

    thanks for explaining. Again, I was just curious. did not occur to me that it was lazy eye as I've never actually met anyone with or seen that condition. Have only heard of it and definitely did not mean to be rude.

    Really cool guitar, but I doubt I'll pick it up. I still have my trusty X-plorer from GH2 and my on-again, off-again RB1 guitar (don't get me started on the MadCatz bass). If I'm ever in need of another giant piece of plastic however, I'll get this for sure.

    GameStop is a major retailer force, the one retailer with a national presence that specializes in just games.

    Also, there's nothing to say that different wings won't appear with a different retailer. For instance, Best Buy and GameStop and Amazon all had their own Transformers pre-order character unlocks; they could be talking with the other partners about guitar wings too.

    I see that the wings look hollow. Could this be a problem? I was also wondering if the guitar was comfortable to use.

    As noted in the video, I didn't get to use the guitar; it's a prototype and I had to give it back. As for the wings being hollow…no, no problem I can think of…they're removable, there just for style. What problem do you foresee?

    I was wondering if they would be too flimsy or light. With the standard wings I though that maybe since they had openings then that would lead to things getting caught or whatever. To be honest I don't know what problems I was thinking of.

    That guitar looks rad. There are definitely better looking and I assume, more playable that the pieces of crap that come with rockband.

    Looks like I have a new (video game) guitar to buy!

    I think the RB vs GH controller is totally a matter of personal preference. I have always liked the GH feel, but other friends swear by the RB controllers. I like the RB bass and prefer to use that when playing bass in the game, but for guitar, I want the GH. Go figure.

    Also, I am a big Fender fan, so I think they did a great job on the look of the RB controllers. But I also like unusual shaped and aggressively styled guitars, as anyone who has seen my collection can attest…
