One of Swords Podcast 018: Swords and Beheadings

by Dan on May 28, 2010

We had to delay this podcast a day just to get all the good stuff in! I’m happy to welcome Bizarre Creations‘ Gareth Wilson, lead designer of Blur — who answers your questions! — and Josh Olin, Community Manager for Treyarch, who spills some very awesome details about Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Hugh and I talk about the Microsoft changing of the guard, Miley Cyrus, Magic: the Gathering, why Hugh thinks Natal is a gimmick, old-school 2600 games, and the winner of the Hugh Sterbakov Memorial PlayStation 2 Giveaway. Also, there may be an impromptu musical performance, and if there is, I would like to apologize in advance.

#018 was definitely a good Podcast, and your “oh hai there” was especially chipper. I heard the third variation of “The Only Stuff that Matters” jingle.

I'm glad Hugh of the People stuck although this week some of the Hollywood Hugh started to rear its ugly head towards the end of the show.

I still need to get my Xbox Live setup, but when I do I'll be getting Blur (probably buy it for my buddy too, he's unemployed). It seems like the perfect game for just racing a few rounds and not needing hours of commitment to satisfy the online experience.

The interview with Josh Olin piqued my interest as well. I don't understand the nay sayers that are doubting the awesomeness of Black Ops. Sure there is a chance the game could not meet expectations, lots of blockbuster sequels and trilogies take the “tons of money = success” approach only to castrate the core fan base.

Either way, Black Ops will make a lot of money. But as was mentioned, hopefully the darker, more mature approach will bring something new to the table and game play.

I'll be honest — I think there's some people who feel if it's not Infinity Ward that it's no good. I would like to think that, if you approach the games without bias, you'll see that's not true. Each game should be taken on its own merits, and Black Ops will need to earn its cred — but I do not feel it should have not work any harder than Blur, Singularity, or even MW2 in that regard. Bias helps no one.

“Man Behind the Mask”, “Dream Warriors” and Paula Abdul? Musically, I think Hugh and I would get along just fine.

To quote Tarantino to Hugh, just because you are a character doesn't mean you HAVE character. =D

Great podcast, as usual. I'm not typically into FPSes, but Black Ops sounds interesting. I wasn't really all that into the superman ultra-madness bad Bruckheimer heroics of MW2s campaign.

As for Blur, are you playing the PC version? If I'm going to pick it up, that's the one I think I'd get. Haven't really decided yet. Dunno if the PC version has anything particularly for/against it.

I won a prize from the show and it was awesome. Got two of the foam Wolverine Claws and the kids play with them. I should have posted pics when I got it :)
