One of Swords Podcast 010: About Whom

by Dan on April 1, 2010

It’s a big week for Modern Warfare 2 as Kat and I talk about the Stimulus Package, the unusual UK sales milestone, and I reveal full details about my time on the USS John C. Stennis playing MW2 with the men and women of the US Navy. Then we tackle a few bits on Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, the major good and minor bad of PAX East, and the true meaning of “Free Bird.” Also, by popular demand, I finally have an in-depth discussion with High Moon Studios’ Matt Tieger about Transformers: The War for Cybertron — and he answers some of your questions!

  • It sounds like I didn’t have my own mic, but I did, honest. I was afraid of overloading it so I stayed back a bit…and I think I was a little too far back. Now that I finally have all my gear, I hope to standardize my recording processes, too.

      Wasn't The Modern Warfare 2 price in the UK 60 pounds at launch? The equivalent of $120 just to buy the game. MW2 looks to be bigger per capita in the UK than in the US.

      As stated, this was number of units sold, not number of dollars or pounds earned. More copies of MW2 were purchased than copies of any other entertainment product.

      Activision tried to retail it at £55-60 here in the UK, but luckily for us consumers, few places actually sold it for that much. In fact, most places were competing for the lowest prices on it, and I got it for £28 on launch day!

      Just wanted to set the record straight since many times, people will get offended over this (I'm surprised no one said anything):

      Soldier = Army
      Airman = Air Force
      Sailor = Navy
      Marine = Marine
      Coast Guardsman = Coast Guard

      I know for sure that Airman hate being called Soldiers and Marines hate being called Sailors.

      That's a very good deal. Glad you spotted it.

      Well, I thought soldier was interchangeable — guess I was wrong. Sorry about that. I didn't want to say “enlisted” because that excludes the officers.

      I read somewhere that the guy stealing the game code also had the audacity to ask the PAX East Enforcement Panel lead by Stepto to unban his gamertag during the Q&A. The reason it was banned was because he played Forza early. As we know, the PET has said that playing a game early isn't a problem is purchased at retail. If obtained through illegal means, then you will get banned.

      I see a trend here.

      So is that Morse Code at the end of the podcast? If so, what does it say? Please let me know! Love the podcast Dan. I really appreciate your intellectual view of games.

      OMG, it was the same guy? I remember hearing about that but didn't realize it was him. Glad to know it wasn't two stupid people ,just one with surprising influence.

      Great show as usual, Dan. Sorry to hear your still not feeling your normal self. I hope you get better soon. Take care and a hello to Kat as well. Peace.

      What I find most interesting is when he was talking to Stepto. His whole reason for going to PAX East was for the Enforcement Panel, essentially to face his banners and request being unbanned (in front of everyone). What makes it even more pathetic is when he started whining. Oh, and the whole stealing code part that will end him in jail. Overall not a good decision on his part.

      I was surprised to find that the suspect, Justin D. May, lived a few minutes away from me over the state border. Was hoping the local news picked up on it so he'd be shamed locally by this but mainstream news failed once again. [I have no problem using his real name since it's a matter of public record and for his irredeamable behavior.]

      Your reaction to May is spot on. Too many people think piracy is OK just because they can get away with it. Not just games but in every medium.

      Thanks for clearing that up. So it got undercutted anyway.
