Ding 80, and some thoughts on WoW

by Dan on April 19, 2010

I started playing World of Warcraft at launch in 2004, took a year off, came back to it, started too many alt characters, and was the official magazine’s first Editor-in-Chief. And then I finally hit level 80 Sunday night.

It may sound silly to people who don’t play WoW, but hitting 80 was an important milestone. I celebrated with a glass of mead for extra geek cred. I have eight characters on this server, and I play different ones with different people, but this one was my main. Kat got her main character to 80 about an hour before I did, so we got to level together.

A few people have asked me why I play WoW, and, well, that’s really the reason. It’s not about the story, even though it is an incredibly detailed fantasy universe, and I do like the drama; it’s not about the gear, even though there are plenty of toys to acquire and oodles of enemies to slice and dice. It’s about the social aspect of the game, and the fact that I get to play with my friends and family. For me, jumping on once a week and being able to voice chat with my brother-in-law across the country or the friends I left back in San Francisco while we slaughter the indigenous residents of Azeroth wholesale is well worth the price of a subscription to me.

That social aspect is also one of the main reasons Kat plays. A lot of people have asked how they can get their significant other interested in games, and it’s something we discussed on the podcast. But Kat’s always said that it’s the social aspect that she likes. Nearly all her go-to games — Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands — give her the chance to play with other people whose company she likes. Even when we played Civilization II, we played the single-player game as a co-op challenge, hovering over each other’s shoulders.

So that’s partly why it’s such a big deal for me to finally hit 80; it was never about mechanically acquiring new weapons and slaying spiders. The appeal of World of Warcraft is partly due to the people at the Blizzard who make the game — but I’d argue it’s also the people not at Blizzard who make the game.

    Firstly, Dan
WHY are you not using any addons????
    Secondly,
Congratulations on getting to 80! Im glad I am not the only one who was not 80, unfortunately im about 5 levels behind you :(
    Thirdly,
I find it interesting that you play a rouge! if you wouldnt mind replying to me that would be great!

oh and i know your a rouge because:
A: you have a yellow energy/mana/rage/runic power bar
B: your hot bar has all rouge spells (i know you can change them but i figured your a point and click spells player instead of a keyboard “masher” like me!)

    1) I currently use WoWEcon as an add-on. I play on multiple machines (four at last count) so it's more of a hassle to install them across all machines than I would like.

After I left ya those few messages on twitter this morning, I had a nice long chat with my brother about WoW… He has never been able to raid. His computer isn't good enough and he doesn't have the time.

Blizzard wouldn't be too happy with what I said to my brother about the game. Basically, it boiled down to how bad raids are, I went over about 12 or 13 points with him over why raids are bad and why it needs to be changed. They can be fun at times, especially when downing a boss for the first time but I think the strongest argument I had was that taking up to a month or sometimes longer to defeat one boss (due to various things – which I wont go into detail here, but did with my brother…) is just ridiculous.

Its funny, my guild that I'm in on WoW is called Burnt After Raiding, go figure after about 4 months of raiding I burnt out on the game (good thing too actually since my family ran into some major money issues and I had to suspend my account).

I do still love alot of the elements in the game, I probably had more fun flying around Wintergrasp for 4+ hours a day mining & killing alliance on my Death Knight… when not dealing with people who were using bots that could mine under ground. Nothing like flying up to another miner in flight, following him at a distance, and then dropping in on him as he begins to mine, then proceeding to kick the snot out of him. :)

I do suggest when you get a chance to head into the 5man ICC instances, of all the level 80 instances I believe they are the most fun. You can gear up pretty good and geek out on the story line.

I think that's pretty cool you guys played Civ2 together. I've thought about having my brother help me out with Civ4, but he doesn't really know the game and I have enough trouble on the difficulty I play on as it is. :P

I believe I already said it, but just incase I didn't, I'll say it here, congrats on 80! :)
