One of Swords Podcast 003: Feel the Love

by Dan on February 11, 2010

Let’s talk about sex! Well, okay, let’s talk about gender. Is the term “girl gamer” an insult? How do you get your better half interested in chainsawing zombies? Will gaming tear your relationship apart? In the spirit of Valentine’s Day we tackle the tough relationship questions with an expert female gamer: Dan’s oft-discussed but never-before-interviewed wife Katrin Auch. The rest of the box of chocolates includes new games confirmed by Activision, MW2 glitches, Breaking Benjamin, iPhone vs. DS, and why companies keep secrets the way they do. Oh, and Britney’s Dance Beat. Really.

Alright I'm calling this in as well but wanted to post it here just incase my call isn't used.

When I started playing WoW back when it first came out (I no longer play.) The question of which gender to play came up and the response from most of the guys in my guild (before they had guilds) was “Why would you want to stare at a male's backside all day?” We were Horde so most the guys who were playing female characters were playing undead since the other female options were disproportional in looks. (Hey we were kids.) I however, was not one of them, it didn't diminish my experience at all. (They were cartoon characters.)

On the subject of girl gamers, can I recommend you this fantastic article on the subject: http://www.trueachievements.com/newsitem.aspx?n.... Definitely worth a read

Really liked hearing Kat on the podcast. It's nice hearing a female voice that isn't trying to be an overcompensating 'gamer grrl' type (I'm not naming podcast names). I vote 3 for the cohost to bring back!

Lack of a physical D-pad on the iphone does make bomberman incredibly difficult

Three shows in and your good lady wife was by far the best co-host to date. Loved the natural flow of the dialogue and it was a lighter listen too (no excessive tech talk this week).

More Mrs A please

Great point on the girl gamer thing. I'm sure some people find it insulting, but unfortunately it seems to be used more so a neon light, something to flaunt by the people that are all like 'yeah, look at me, I'm one of those GIRLS that are so rare'. More people abuse that label than are insulted by it, unfortunately.

I hope people do get over it eventually, online gaming would be a much better place without this superior attitude.
